India train station – navigating India's vast railway network

India has one of the world's largest and most complex public transportation networks. Getting around can feel daunting at first, but with a little preparation the trains, buses and auto-rickshaws become one of the great pleasures of travelling here — offering intimate encounters with Indian life that no private taxi or tour bus can replicate.

From the majestic Rajdhani Express thundering across the plains at 130 km/h to the battered local bus inching up a Himalayan mountain road, to the weaving three-wheeled auto-rickshaw navigating Old Delhi's impossibly narrow lanes — India's transport system is a spectacular microcosm of the country itself.

Trains

Indian Railways is the fourth largest railway network in the world, carrying over 8 billion passengers per year. For long-distance travel between cities, the train is almost always the best option — faster than the bus, more comfortable, scenic and with the unique experience of an Indian journey woven in.

Buses

India bus travel – local bus journey through the Indian countryside

India's intercity bus network is extensive and often reaches places that trains do not, particularly in the hills and mountains. State-run buses are cheap but often overcrowded and slow. Private "sleeper buses" on popular tourist routes offer reasonable comfort for overnight journeys at low cost.

Cheap

State buses are the cheapest form of transport in India — often just a few rupees for short journeys.

Flexible

Buses reach remote areas and hill stations inaccessible by train, including mountain villages.

Overnight

Private "Volvo" AC sleeper buses on routes like Manali-Leh save a hotel night and maximise time.

Mountain buses: Himalayan mountain roads can be vertiginous and the driving style alarming. Choose reputable operators, avoid overnight mountain bus journeys where possible, and always wear a seatbelt if one is available.

Rickshaws

India auto-rickshaw – the iconic three-wheeler tuk-tuk in an Indian city

The auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) is one of India's most iconic modes of urban transport — a three-wheeled, two-stroke motorised vehicle found in every city and town. Cycle rickshaws (pedal-powered) are common in narrower old-city areas. Both are excellent for short journeys and atmospheric rides through city streets.

Many rickshaw drivers don't use meters (or claim they're broken). Always agree on a price before you get in. Ask your hotel what a fair price is for your destination. Use Ola or Uber (both available in most Indian cities) for metered, transparent pricing that eliminates negotiation.

Ola and Uber operate extensively in all major Indian cities. Both apps work with international cards. Ola Auto option offers metered auto-rickshaw rides — cheapest option for city travel. Rapido app offers bike taxi services in many cities for solo travellers.

Cycle rickshaws are the best way to explore Old Delhi, Agra's back streets and old city quarters. They go slowly enough to really see the surroundings. Agree the price in advance and tip generously — the riders work extremely hard for very little.
