About This Journey

Varanasi — also known as Kashi or Benares — is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth and the spiritual capital of India. For Hindus, it is the most sacred place in the universe: a city where the divine and the human exist in permanent, intimate proximity.

Burning ghats where the deceased are cremated in full view of the street. Temple bells ringing before dawn. Pilgrims immersed to their waists in the sacred waters of Mother Ganga. Holy men meditating in riverside ashrams. The haunting evening Ganga Aarti ceremony, when hundreds of lamps are offered to the river in a ritual of breathtaking devotion. In Varanasi, the eternal drama of life, death and rebirth is played out openly, unselfconsciously and with extraordinary beauty.

This four-day spiritual journey is designed for travellers who want to experience Varanasi with depth and understanding — not just as observers, but as participants in the spiritual life of this remarkable city. Your guide is a Varanasi-born expert who has spent a lifetime studying the city's philosophy, mythology and daily rhythms.

He will introduce you not just to the famous sights, but to the hidden temples, the early-morning bathing ghats before the tourists arrive, the quiet courtyards where classical musicians practice, and the scholars who have dedicated their lives to preserving the ancient Sanskrit tradition.

The journey also includes a day trip to Sarnath — the deer park where the Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, and one of the four most sacred sites in Buddhism. The archaeological museum here contains some of the finest examples of Mauryan art ever found, including the magnificent Lion Capital that became the emblem of modern India.

Whether you are religious or not, Varanasi is a city that leaves no one unchanged. It confronts you with the fundamental questions of human existence and invites you to sit with them, rather than to flee. It is the most intense, most challenging and ultimately most life-affirming city in India.
