About This Tour

Tamil Nadu is the guardian of India's oldest living civilisation — Dravidian culture — whose extraordinary temples, classical arts, music, dance and cuisine have survived and flourished for over 2,000 years with virtually no external interruption.

While North India's cultural heritage was shaped by centuries of Mughal rule, Tamil Nadu remained largely independent, preserving a distinctly South Indian tradition of monumental temple architecture, classical Carnatic music, Bharatanatyam dance, intricate bronze sculpture and a cuisine of unparalleled complexity and refinement. Visiting Tamil Nadu is like stepping into a living museum of one of humanity's greatest cultural achievements.

This seven-day tour is designed as a genuine cultural immersion — not a passive sightseeing experience, but an active engagement with Tamil Nadu's living traditions. You will spend time in temples not just as a tourist but as a respectful participant in their daily rituals. You will sit in on a classical music performance in a private home. You will take a cooking class with a local family, learning the secrets of Tamil Nadu's magnificent cuisine. You will participate in a traditional banana leaf meal. You will meet artists in their studios and visit weavers at their looms.

The tour begins in Chennai (Madras), Tamil Nadu's dynamic capital, and moves through Mahabalipuram — home to UNESCO-listed 7th-century rock-cut temples and sculptures that are among the finest in India — then to the temple cities of Kanchipuram, Kumbakonam and the magnificent Madurai, whose towering Meenakshi Amman Temple is arguably the greatest piece of religious architecture in India.

On each day of the tour, your specialist guide will provide deep context for what you are seeing — the mythology behind each temple's deity, the history of each dynasty that built it, the significance of each ritual being performed. By the end of seven days, you will have a genuine understanding of and deep affection for one of the world's most extraordinary living cultures.

Temple Architecture

Tamil Nadu's gopurams (temple towers) are the tallest and most ornate religious structures in the world — some towering over 60 metres high.

Bharatanatyam

One of India's oldest classical dance forms, originating in Tamil Nadu's temple devadasi tradition. Witness a live performance by a trained Bharatanatyam artist.

Carnatic Music

The classical music tradition of South India, with its extraordinary system of ragas and improvisation. Attend an intimate private performance in a musician's home.

Tamil Cuisine

From dosa and idli to chettinad chicken curry and filter coffee — Tamil Nadu's cuisine is one of the world's most sophisticated vegetarian culinary traditions.

Bronze Sculpture

Tamil Nadu's Chola-era bronze figures are regarded as among the finest sculptures ever made. Visit workshops where this 1,000-year-old tradition continues.

Rock-Cut Temples

Mahabalipuram's 7th-century rock-cut temples and shore temple are UNESCO-listed masterpieces of early Dravidian architecture.
